in with michele obama, a portion of michele obama's speech, what did you think of it? >> it was a great speech, it really was. so many personal anecdotes you could visualize. we were talking last week about how ann romney said a lot of great things about mitt romney but never gave you the visuals. john said it best. who in america are in that convention hall -- or in that convention hall watching the speech didn't get the image of a loving father struck with ms, seeing his two children sat the top of the stairs and fighting and struggling to get up those stairs to hug his children at the end of the day or fighting and struggling to get out of bad to go to work to give them a slice of the american dream. it was an absolutely fantastic speech. and the great line, absolutely loved the line, that being president doesn't change who you are, it reveals who you are. >> very personal, very revealing but it also might have accomplished something in terms of touching on some key areas that might have needed some work, not that the president, you would think, had a problem with the women's vote. >> right

of barack obama's first-term record, and they are deploying him now in swing states, even more than michelle obama, he's probably the biggest asset they have. but life is long. you never know when you're going to end up, that these two men are now embracing to this extent. >> life is really long. >> you know, the president got a bounce at the convention, and it's arguable that clinton played a big part in that. we have this new pew research center poll that i found real estate interesting. it showed, when they were asking, what was the highlight of the democratic convention, 29% bill clinton's speech, 16% said the president's speech, and michelle obama's speech was at 15%. so does that also mean that there is a downside to having president clinton -- >> oh, you mean overshadowing -- you know, he -- everybody knows hays not the candidate. i think he's a great character witness for the candidate. i think there was a dangerous dangeat the convention of that kind of a result, because you want your candidate to shine, not the person who is testifying on your behalf to shine. but i think right now

whether that combined with michelle obama and president obama's speech is going to produce a bump. it's a polarized electorate. bumps aren't easy. democrats are happy with last night. >> john, very early on in clinton's speech he really tried to own the obama line about you didn't build it. i thought that was actually somewhat surprising really trying to suggest that actually maybe that line he actually meant the first time around. >> well, democrats do mean it in the sense that not in the way in which republicans have been using it against the president, but they do believe -- i mean, it's the whole theory behind hillary clinton's book "it takes the village." we all remember that. it's the idea that collective action is a big part of our individual success, which is something that when we look at, say, a country like iraq where we've been at war, the emphasis on the rebuilding process is on creating institutions and civil society and rule of law and all the things that allow individual enterprise to prosper. that's the point the democrats were making and they're trying to drive that
